Anthony (Tony) has been working in the construction industry for 37 years. He started life as a construction trade apprentice with Dumbarton County Council. When this apprenticeship was completed in 1973 he moved on to the private sector being employed mainly on building sites for 9 years.
He later took up a position as a Housing Inspector in 1982 with Clydebank District Council, and this is where he first took an interest in Health and Safety. While working as a Trade Union Safety Rep for N.A.L.G.O. during this time he had the opportunity to attend a thirteen week, TUC Health and Safety Course in Reid Kerr College and various other health and safety training courses organised by the Trade Union.
He then moved on to Strathclyde Regional Council as a Property Sector Officer with the D.A.R.S section where his main area of responsibility was looking after various Regional Council owned premises. This included the supervision of all building contractors who carried out maintenance works on Strathclyde Regional Council premises.
When Strathclyde Regional Council disbanded he was transferred to Strathclyde Police Property Services Section. His main role there was supervision of all works within the divisions under his responsibility. He attended a three-day climbing course on tall structures in Kendal before being made responsible for the inspection of all radio masts owned by Strathclyde Police throughout Strathclyde.
